Chrani
About an hour south of Kalamata by bus, on the opposite side of the Bay of Messinia from Stoupa, stands the tiny coastal village of Chrani, rising up the hillside behind a curving shingle beach.
Not so much a resort, more a retreat from the stresses and strains of the workaday world, it's about as far "away-from-it-all" as a Greek holiday destination can get. Don't come looking for discos, boisterous bars, or hyper-active watersports! This is rural Greece as it always used to be, basking in the sun to a soundtrack of cicadas, and waves lazily lapping at the water's edge. At the time of writing, there's just a handful of tavernas, two mini-supermarkets and a few bars - hardly Acapulco, we think you'll agree! However, if you want a quiet base in a lovely setting, where you can enjoy fine countryside walks, explore the unspoilt southern Peloponnese by hire car at your leisure, and rediscover the real meaning of relaxation, Chrani will be just what the doctor ordered.
