Once the port for the ancient Minoan city of Lyttos, Hersonissos today is one of the most fashionable Cretan resorts. Its attractive fishing harbour and huge selection of restaurants, nightclubs and bars make it a firm favourite with the young and lively crowd. The busy north coast road runs right through the resort, lined with shops and tavernas, and side roads lead down to the long narrow sandy beach, overlooked by several waterfront bars. Turn inland from this road and you'll soon discover the tiny hillside village of Koutouloufari and Piskopiano, with brilliantly whitewashed houses and several friendly tavernas in its narrow winding streets, and pleasant views down to Hersonissos, where all the action is!
