Against the backdrop of the mountains at the mouth of Souda Bay, around 20 kilometres east of Chania, the small agricultural town of Kalives stands beside a long stretch of sandy beach with clear warm seas. Kalives is a favourite day out for the locals from nearby Chania at weekends, and it's just far enough off the beaten track to avoid being spoilt by tourism, although there is now a night club open in high season. Holiday accommodation is spread around the town, rising up the hillside behind the central square "away-from-it-all" holiday, with lots of Cretan warmth and charm.
