Crete > Makriyalos

Makriyalos Beach
When we first discovered Makriyalos in southeast Crete, it was a well-kept secret - a tiny quiet village with a lovely, uncrowded beach. The beach is still there, but the village has grown into a lively resort in its own right, with a good choice of places to eat, and several bars. 'Makri' means long, and 'yalos' means shore - and it's sand and shingle all the way along and out into the sea. The shallow, warm water offers safe swimming for all, and spread along the beach are several tavernas and bars. Shopping is still fairly limited, but you'll find all the essentials. There are cars for hire, and plenty of trips and excursions to all the Cretan sights.

The south coastal road runs through the village, with regular buses if you want to explore a little. We suspect most people who choose Makriyalos won't want to do much more than relax and enjoy the simple things in life - swimming, windsurfing, fresh fish and salad lunches in a beachside taverna, dinner under the stars overlooking the old harbour, a drink or three... maybe followed by dancing off a few of those calories at the disco. This magical little village is all about seasons in the sun!
