Rethymnon Beach
The Venetians knew a good thing when they saw it and when they chanced upon the town of Rethymnon, with its endless stretches of satin sand and glorious sunshine, they decided to stay awhile! We're delighted they did, because they left behind some pretty impressive souvenirs and their magnificent 16th-century Fortezza walls still dominate the skyline. Another is the vast sandy beach, stretching out from the town eastwards as far as the eye can see. Here's where you'll find most of the holiday accommodation, in smart modern hotels and apartments, following the shoreline. Small resort areas have sprung up along the way, with their own tavernas, bars and mini-supermarkets. Frequent local buses and taxis make it easy to head off into town, whenever the fancy takes you.

Rethymnon itself is a fascinating blend of ancient and modern. Browsing past its fashionable shops, restaurants and nightclubs, or strolling along the shore road lined with palm trees and pavement cafes, you can round a corner and suddenly find yourself in the welcome shade of a narrow maze of cobbled streets, overhung by the balconies of old Turkish houses or at pretty, circular Venetian harbour which has all the picturesqe charm of a Cretan fishing village.
