Sharm El-Sheikh 

Sharm El-Sheikh is Egypt’s best known beach resort – yet less than twenty years ago it was a tiny fishing settlement sandwiched between the desert and the Red Sea, in the shadow of the mountain ranges of the Sinai Peninsula.
 
The transformation in such a short time is amazing! The first visitors to discover the magic of ‘Sharm’ were the world’s diving community, but it very soon became established as a mainstream, all-round holiday destination. Smart new hotel complexes now offer holidaymakers from around the globe a luxurious base for enjoying the natural splendour and glorious beaches of the region, whilst dining and shopping in style. 

The choice of restaurants, nightclubs and shops will satisfy the most demanding leisure and pleasure seekers, with International cuisines (including Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Indian) alongside local specialities - and even ‘fast food’ to keep the youngsters happy! Despite its rapid rise to fame, the growth of ‘Sharm’ has been tastefully managed, and even though there are dozens of hotels spread throughout the resort, it never feels crowded or over-developed.

If you can tear yourself away from the pampered lifestyle beside the pool, try a day trip out across the sun-baked desert, perhaps visiting St Catherine’s Monastery, or taking a camel ride up Mount Sinai itself to enjoy spectacular panoramic views.

Naturally, the area around this cosmopolitan holiday playground is still a paradise for diving enthusiasts of all standards. Beginners will love the gently sloping sands in sheltered Naama Bay, offering a perfect introduction to the sport (and excellent snorkelling opportunities) whilst qualified divers can explore the colourful reefs and wrecks of the Gulf of Aqaba to their hearts content. 

For an exciting challenge, take the short trip to the southern tip of Sinai at the Ras Mohammed peninsula, a national marine park where huge drop-offs at spectacular Shark Reef will keep experienced divers very happy indeed!
