Kalymnos
Famous as the island of sponge divers, Kalymnos has only recently begun to welcome significant numbers of holiday makers.
The island capital, known as either Kalymnos Town, or Pothia, is a lively port, and behind its pavement cafes and harbour front tavernas lies an original Greek town, with brightly painted houses in blues and greens lining the narrow winding streets, and several large attractive churches. Kalymnos has three mountain ranges, divided by fertile valleys. On the west coast, opposite the island of Telendos, lies the island's main resort area, stretching for about 5 kilometres from Panormos Bay and the sand and shingle beaches of Kantouni and Linaria, up to the neighbouring settlements of Myrties and Massouri on the wooded hillside, with steps leading down to the shore. Boats run across to Telendos, while in the north, the village of Emborio has two quieter stretches of coarse sand. Each small resort area has its own tavernas and a few lively music bars, but nightlife here hasn't yet reached the hectic stage. For now, Kalymnos offers a perfect mixture of original Greek charm, and friendly little resorts!
