A few kilometres south of the island capital, Argostoli, the road turns inland through the fertile coastal region of Livatho, past small hamlets slumbering in the sunshine. Smart modern houses stand alongside fine old traditional stone villas, their well-tended gardens bright with bougainvillea, hibiscus, oleander, and jasmine. One such village, Svoronata, is slowly being discovered by holidaymakers looking for a more tranquil base within easy reach of the delights of lively Lassi, and Argostoli itself. Holiday accommodation shelters among the surrounding olive and citrus groves, and in the central village area small shops, tavernas and the odd bar are appearing to cater for the fledgling tourist trade. There are three lovely beaches within walking distance - at Ammes, Helis, and the gently shelving pale sands at Avithos, where you'll find watersports and a mobile café on the beach, and a couple of tavernas close at hand. Because Svoronata's accommodation is so well spread out, you're sure to find yourselves with a pleasant walk along a country lane to the beach, and another to the taverna in the evening. With no hills to speak of, cycle hire is popular, and of course with a hire car, the whole island is yours to explore at your leisure. As a laid-back alternative to the island's more established resorts, Svoronata is a very smart choice!
