In contrast to the busy resorts of Kos Town and Kardamena, old Kefalos is a peaceful hillside village slumbering in the sunshine below a rural fortress in the south west of the island, about forty kilometres from the capital. It overlooks the islands newest and most laid-back resort, also called Kefalos, down near the shore, about two kilometres away. The bars, tavernas and holiday accommodation follow the long curve of beautiful Kamari Bay. In the middle of the bay, dividing the broad sweep of coarse sand and shingle beach, lies tiny Kastri island with its little blue and white church, and conditions here are ideal for windsurfers. Boats leave the small harbour for more delightful sandy beaches round the headland, called Paradise and Magic - two words that we reckon sum up Kefalos pretty well!
