Lefkas
The Ionian island of Lefkas ('white island') takes its name from the creamy-white cliffs and magnificent beaches of coarse white sand and pebble along its western shoreline, including Aghios Nikitas, Kalamitsi and Porto Katsiki.
At the end of the narrow causeway linking the island to the Greek mainland Lefkas Town stands beside a salt lake, overlooked by Faneromeni Monastery, and the Venetian fortress of St George over on the mainland.
The island's interior is green and mountainous, with one main road running around the coastline.Lefkas has two internationally renowned sailing centres - Nidri, which specialises in dinghies and yachts, and Vassiliki, a mecca for windsurfers.
Lefkas is not the place to come looking for wild nightlife although Nidri can be lively in high season. It's just a beautiful island with plenty of Greek character, ideal for a relaxing holiday in lovely surroundings.
