Driving southwards along the coast road from Afandou, you catch sight of long stretches of sandy beach where the only signs of life are likely to be a mobile cantina, a couple of windsurfers and a scattering of beach umbrellas. Just beyond the Moroccan-style craft village of Archangelos, a side turning leads to the tranquil fishing harbour of Haraki, where colourful boats bob at anchor beside a crescent of sand and shingle beach. The shady esplanade, lined with cafe bars and tavernas, is overlooked by the imposing ruins of Feraclos Castle, last stronghold of the Knights of St John, with superb views across the water to Lindos. There's fine swimming in this sheltered bay, and less than a kilometre away lie the sweeping sands and dunes of secluded Agathi beach. Haraki is a delightful little resort, just right for a laid-back holiday, and a great base for exploring Rhodes by hire car.
