Rhodes Town is the cultural and shopping capital of the Dodecanese islands, as well as having some of the most sophisticated nightlife in Greece. If you want to be close to all this action, yet prefer to stay in a beach resort rather than in the centre of town itself, take a look at the modern purpose-built tourist centre of Ixia.

As you head down the west coast road out of town, it's the first resort area you come to, pretty much a suburb of the capital itself. On your right hand side runs an endless stretch of shingle beach, complete with sunbeds and umbrellas, watersports centres and beach bars. To your left, across the road from the beach, you'll find most of the resort's bars, restaurants and accommodation, including some of the island's top hotel and apartment complexes. 

As you continue down the coast road, Ixia merges into the neighbouring resort of Trianda, or Ialyssos, which are very similar in character. Head up onto the hills above the old village here to discover the beautifully restored monastery of Filerimos, with stunning views across the Aegean to the mountains of the Turkish coast.
