Skopelos
Larger, more ruggedly mountainous, and with more original Greek character than neighbouring Skiathos, the pine-covered island of Skopelos has no airport, so you arrive here via the pleasant sea crossing from Skiathos.
The island capital, Skopelos Town, is a maze of steep, narrow alleyways overhung by wooden balconies, with glimpses between the tall houses down to the busy sunlit harbour below. There are smart boutiques, cafe-bars and restaurants as well as more typical tavernas, and Skopelos Town offers a nice mixture of tourist facilities and Greek village life. The island bus plies the coastal road as it winds along the hillside all the way to Glossa in the north, with wonderful views along the coastline. A series of beautiful coves of coarse sand and shingle, often with shaded beachside tavernas, provide excellent swimming in the crystal clear waters. Skopelos is a great choice for a quieter holiday in the lovely Sporades Islands.
